Ethics in Times of COVID-19
We stand in solidarity with all those whose families, health and livelihoods have been and are being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognise the gravity of the situation, the deep consequences on the economy at world and local levels, on societies and the heavy burden carried by healthcare systems and personnel. We support leaders and the international community in their efforts to take decisions in the best interests of all concerned in these difficult circumstances.
For the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak, all those in our Globethics.net network are asked to observe the regulations and guidance in force in their respective countries and regions. Rather than engaging in spirals of fear and scapegoating, it is recommended that reliable sources of information be consulted regularly (e.g. World Health Organisation) and that responsibility be taken when sharing information that it is accurate and up to date.
Prevention is paramount. Equally if not more important is the practice of ethical principles in our treatment of and behaviour with others. In times like these, we, at Globethics.net, commit ourselves to apply our core ethical principles of:
- Responsibility in our decisions and actions to safeguard the health and well-being of each person;
- Respect for the dignity of every person;
- Inclusion with a view to ensuring equality, justice and fairness in solidarity with each person regardless of creed, race, status, age, occupation or gender.
In our day-to-day work, for the duration of the outbreak, all in our network are asked to:
- follow basic hygiene rules with regular hand washing and keeping physical distance;
- arrange video conferences and calls rather than physical meetings;
- cancel or postpone non-essential travel;
- work from home when possible;
- stay at home if they are among those groups that are most at risk;
- stay at home and seek medical assistance when symptoms present
